New Security Council Draft on Western Sahara Sparks Controversy and Diplomatic Pushback

The UN Security Council faces sharp criticism over a new draft resolution concerning Western Sahara, described as even more biased than its predecessors. The United States, acting as the penholder, is under scrutiny for its handling of the file and its failure to uphold past agreements. The draft includes controversial proposals to strip the term "referendum" from the MINURSO mission's title and transition it into a purely political body with reduced military presence. Furthermore, it attempts to sideline the international legal framework by pushing for autonomy as the sole negotiation basis. In response, the Polisario Front has formally warned the Security Council that it would abandon the peace process entirely if the current draft is passed without major changes. The Council is now navigating a complex situation, with internal pressure from member states to ensure that any final decision remains aligned with international law and the principle of self-determination.
