A report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has identified 2025 as one of the three driest years for river flow in over three decades. The global water cycle is described as increasingly erratic and unpredictable, driven by receding glaciers and the progressive depletion of freshwater reserves. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that global continental water stocks have been declining for ten years, noting that these crucial reserves are being exhausted. The report highlights that Asia and Africa have suffered the majority of water-related disasters and fatalities over the past five years. Meanwhile, the intensification of the El Niño climate phenomenon is heightening the risks of both floods and droughts worldwide. Glacier mass loss totaled 1,400 gigatonnes between 2023 and 2025, highlighting a water crisis that transcends national borders.
