Amid global energy market instability, France has reached out to Algeria to request an increase in shipments of both crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). This effort is part of a broader French initiative to secure reliable energy sources, a campaign that also involves seeking additional supplies from Gulf nations. While Algeria shows potential to scale up oil exports—building on a significant rise in April 2026, when it reached 138,000 barrels per day for the French market—LNG supplies face greater obstacles. Constraints linked to Sonatrach’s existing long-term contracts with international buyers limit the flexibility to divert volumes to France. As of now, neither the Algerian Ministry of Energy nor Sonatrach has provided an official statement regarding these reports of requested supply increases.
