Algeria calls for UN Security Council reform and African representation
Speaking at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, declared that reforming the Security Council is an urgent matter. He pointed out that structural gaps limit the Council's effectiveness in addressing international security challenges, specifically those affecting Africa. Highlighting the historical injustice regarding the continent's underrepresentation, the Algerian diplomat stated that Africa should be granted at least two permanent seats, including veto power, and five non-permanent seats. This push for reform, aligned with the common African position and the Sirte Declaration, aims to establish a more legitimate and representative Security Council. Algeria reaffirmed its commitment to working with other member states to achieve these meaningful changes.
