At a meeting of the UNHCR Executive Committee in Geneva, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Idriss Latreche, declared that humanitarian aid for Sahrawi refugees is an inherent right rather than a tool for political maneuvering. Highlighting Algeria's five-decade commitment to hosting refugees, Latreche stressed the necessity of keeping humanitarian considerations separate from political debates. He dismissed claims from the Moroccan side regarding sustainable solutions as opportunistic. The Algerian official emphasized three core facts: the refugees originate from a non-self-governing territory, the camps in Tindouf maintain transparency under the supervision of numerous UN agencies and NGOs, and humanitarian aid must never be politicized. He concluded by urging the international community to continue supporting the refugees while addressing the root causes of the Western Sahara conflict.
