Real Estate Fraud: Former Algiers Mayor Sentenced Over Failed Housing Project

The court of Bir Mourad Raïs has sentenced the former mayor of Algiers-Centre to four years in prison for abuse of office, following the failure of a 1400-unit social promotional housing (LSP) project in Saoula. The real estate developer linked to the scheme received a seven-year prison term for fraud. Evidence shows that buyers were charged between 80 and 150 million centimes each, yet the construction site has remained untouched since 2016. While approximately 1,000 victims have officially filed complaints, estimates suggest up to 2,000 individuals may have been affected by the scam. This ruling reflects the ongoing judicial crackdown on corruption involving local officials and contractors in public real estate developments.
