Bank of Algeria Governor calls for macroeconomic stability at IMF meeting in Bangkok

At the 54th meeting of the IMF’s International Monetary and Financial Committee in Bangkok, Bank of Algeria Governor Mohand Bourai emphasized the necessity of restoring macroeconomic and financial stability. Representing a group of seven nations, Bourai advocated for protecting public investment through credible policy frameworks that foster inclusive growth. He urged closer coordination between the IMF, regional institutions, and development partners to help member countries mobilize domestic resources amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Europe. Bourai noted that while inflationary pressures and rising food costs are straining household budgets, policy advice must remain country-specific. He highlighted that while energy-importing economies face growth hurdles due to supply chain disruptions, energy exporters like Algeria and Libya may gain fiscal space to pursue reforms. Furthermore, he reaffirmed support for a well-resourced IMF based on a robust quota system and called for greater clarity on financing needs for low-income countries.
