New traffic law in Algeria: Fines for worn tires doubled to 6,000 DA

As autumn rains arrive, authorities are highlighting the dangers of driving with worn-out tires, which significantly increase braking distances and hydroplaning risks. Under the new 2026 traffic code (Law No. 26-09), the fine for non-compliant tires has been doubled to 6,000 DA from the previous 3,000 DA. This third-degree violation results in the retention of the driver's license until the fine is paid within a 45-day window. Failure to settle the amount on time leads to a court case, doubling the penalty to 12,000 DA. Furthermore, law enforcement officers have the authority to immobilize vehicles if tire conditions pose a severe safety hazard. Drivers are urged to check tread wear indicators and general tire health to ensure compliance and road safety.
