Sonatrach is well-positioned to leverage the current surge in global gas prices, which recently exceeded 90 euros per MWh in Europe, by channeling additional volumes into the spot market. Energy expert Baghdad Mandouche attributes this price rally to ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and depleted storage levels in major consuming nations. Mandouche suggested that Algeria could allocate surplus gas—currently earmarked for domestic electricity production—toward exports, especially during the current season where internal demand remains stable. While Sonatrach continues to supply key partners like Italy and Spain through long-term contracts, the current market dynamics offer a window for additional revenue. Minister of Energy Mohamed Arkab noted that Algeria's long-term contract pricing stands at 11 dollars per million British thermal units (MMBtu), providing a stable revenue stream that contrasts with the volatility inherent in spot market transactions.
