Green Dam initiative: Over 42,000 hectares rehabilitated with further expansions planned
The General Directorate of Forests has reported significant progress in the Green Dam rehabilitation and expansion program, with 42,376 hectares planted between 2023 and 2026. Plans for 2026-2027 include additional planting covering over 34,000 hectares, aiming for a total of 47,917 hectares. Officially launched by the President in October 2023 in Djelfa with a budget of 75 billion dinars, the project seeks to combat desertification and restore ecosystems across 4.7 million hectares in 13 steppe wilayas. The initiative supports local agriculture by providing fruit tree saplings, such as olives and carobs, and focuses on developing recreational forests and mountain areas through partnerships with public and private forestry engineering firms.
