Polisario Front rejects autonomy, reaffirms right to self-determination
Brahim Ghali, leader of the Polisario Front, has formally requested that the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, ensure future negotiations on Western Sahara do not limit outcomes to the proposed autonomy plan. Ghali argued that predetermining a political settlement violates the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and threatens the integrity of the peace process. The movement advocates for maintaining the original mandate of MINURSO to hold a referendum. Former UN envoy Christopher Ross supported this perspective, warning that imposing unilateral solutions would only fuel insecurity and fail to address the root causes of the conflict. Furthermore, the Polisario called for immediate UN intervention regarding human rights abuses, the release of political prisoners, and full access for international observers to the region.
