IMF: Algeria cements its status as the leading Maghreb economy

The International Monetary Fund's latest projections highlight Algeria's dominance in the Maghreb region, with its GDP reaching $331 billion. This figure secures the nation a spot among the top four economies in Africa, trailing South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria. A notable strength of the Algerian economy is its external debt, which remains under 1% of its GDP, ensuring significant financial sovereignty. Economic growth for 2026 is forecast at 3.8%, largely driven by non-hydrocarbon sectors like agriculture and manufacturing, which have seen a growth of approximately 4%. Regionally, Algeria maintains a substantial lead over its neighbors, as the GDP of the next closest Maghreb economy, Morocco, stands at $194.33 billion.
