Crackdown on speculation: Algeria targets market manipulation
Recent images of food products like sardines and tomatoes being discarded have exposed the artificial inflation of consumer prices in Algeria. These speculative activities, orchestrated to limit supply and secure illegal profits, have prompted the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Algiers Court to launch urgent and exhaustive investigations. Authorities intend to dismantle organized criminal networks and enforce strict legal sanctions against all participants, financiers, and beneficiaries. In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Trade is drafting regulations to cap profit margins and control intermediaries, following instructions from the President. Additionally, investigations into meat import monopolies have been initiated, and plans are underway to create a public agency tasked with buying surplus agricultural production to stabilize market supply.
