French government pressed over detention and visitation rights of Sahrawi activist Naâma Asfari

French Senator Pascal Savoldelli has formally questioned the government regarding the imprisonment of Sahrawi human rights activist Naâma Asfari, held in Morocco since 2010. Citing findings from UN bodies, including a 2023 ruling on arbitrary detention and a 2016 report on torture, the senator is calling for diplomatic action to secure Asfari’s release. The issue highlights severe restrictions on visitation rights for his wife, Claude Mangin, who has been barred from seeing him since 2019, most recently being turned away at the Moroccan border in October. This restriction also affected an official delegation from the city of Ivry-sur-Seine. As the trade union Solidaires emphasizes the deteriorating conditions and hunger strikes within the prison system, the French government is facing pressure to use its position as a UN Security Council member to address these human rights concerns.
