Rima Hassan trial: Defense claims political intimidation in Paris

European Parliament member Rima Hassan faced trial at the Paris Criminal Court on October 19 and 20 over charges of "apology for terrorism." The case stems from a now-deleted social media post regarding Palestinian resistance, which mentioned Kozo Okamoto, involved in the 1972 Lod airport attack. Hassan chose to exercise her right to silence after declaring the proceedings an attempt to silence a political opponent. The courtroom atmosphere was highly contentious, characterized by heated confrontations between defense lawyers and civil parties, causing temporary interruptions. The defense argued that the legal action is politically motivated, intended to curtail freedom of expression, and raised procedural objections regarding the custody conditions. Journalist Alain Gresh testified, challenging the labeling of the 1972 incident as terrorism, as the trial unfolds amidst broader international debate over the Palestinian cause.
