The Great Wall of China: From defensive fortress to economic pillar

During a field visit to the historic Juyongguan pass, we explored the Great Wall of China, which spans an estimated 21,196 kilometers according to 2012 data. Built over centuries by successive dynasties, most notably the Ming, the wall served as a strategic defense system integrated into the complex terrain. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site has transformed into a massive economic engine. Tourism revenue extends far beyond entrance fees, creating a comprehensive service chain including transport, guiding, and souvenirs, which provides vital employment for local communities. The Chinese experience provides insights for developing Algerian archaeological sites, such as the Casbah and Timgad, by converting them into structured tourism experiences while preserving their historical integrity. In the context of the "Belt and Road" initiative, China demonstrates how its instruments of power have shifted from ancient mountain fortifications to modern global economic and infrastructure connectivity.
