Over 1000 Algerian Municipalities Struggling with Financial Deficits
Minister of Interior, Brahim Merad, stated that at least 1000 municipalities in Algeria are currently grappling with financial deficits that hinder their ability to provide public services. During a presentation to the Finance Committee of the National People's Assembly, the Minister outlined plans to boost local revenue collection. Proposed measures include extending the tourist tax to 600 additional hotel establishments, which is expected to increase earnings by 20%, and improving the collection of the meat sanitary tax. Additionally, the government intends to optimize municipal property management by allowing the conversion of concession rights into ownership transfers for investors in accordance with new laws. Projections indicate that local tax revenues will reach 646.23 billion dinars by 2027, compared to 608.14 billion in 2026.
