The Italian engineering firm ROPES has pulled out of a contentious cable car project in occupied Jerusalem, marking the fifth international company to withdraw from the initiative. ROPES was initially approached by the Jerusalem Development Authority for consultancy services, but management cited other professional obligations for the decision. The 1.4-kilometer cable car system, intended to link West Jerusalem to a tourist site in Silwan near the Old City, faces significant opposition from human rights groups and heritage experts. Critics warn that the project threatens 54 Palestinian homes housing roughly 450 people and risks disfiguring the historical landscape. Despite the Israeli Supreme Court rejecting challenges in 2022 and the previous departures of French and Swiss firms, local authorities state they intend to proceed with the tender process.
