France Seeks Urgent Energy Supply Increases from Algeria

France has directly approached Algeria to request an urgent increase in oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies due to ongoing energy market volatility. While the Algerian state company Sonatrach possesses the capacity to boost oil exports, its ability to increase LNG shipments is restricted by firm, long-term contractual obligations to international partners. Algeria has already become a key supplier for France; in April 2026, Paris emerged as the top buyer of Algerian crude, receiving 138,000 barrels per day. Industry experts note that while oil export adjustments are feasible, LNG supplies remain locked in fixed schedules. Neither the Algerian Ministry of Energy nor Sonatrach has released an official statement regarding the specific details or outcomes of these bilateral discussions.
