Algeria boosts food security through scientific research and agricultural innovation

Marking World Food Day 2026, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, Sid Ali Khaldi, declared that food security remains a top national priority for Algeria. The country's strategy focuses on adopting modern technology, expanding agricultural land—particularly in the southern provinces—and prioritizing strategic crops such as cereals. Noureddine Ouaddah, Minister of Knowledge Economy and Startups, highlighted the essential role of youth-led startups in modernizing traditional agricultural practices. Key pillars of this initiative include upgrading seed genetics, enhancing irrigation efficiency, and providing support to small-scale farmers, with continued cooperation from the FAO, which is celebrating 25 years of partnership in Algeria. During the event, several investors were honored for their work in sectors ranging from honey production to AI applications, while a scientific exhibition showcased new developments in food processing and crop diversification.
