The Hidden Risks of Using Baking Soda on Your Skin

DIY facial recipes featuring baking soda have become popular on social media as a quick remedy for exfoliating or treating acne. Experts, however, warn that because baking soda is highly alkaline, it disrupts the skin's naturally acidic pH and damages its protective barrier. Regular use can lead to excessive dryness, irritation, redness, and can even worsen acne or cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Given the lack of scientific evidence supporting its safety or efficacy, dermatologists advise sticking to gentle, purpose-made cleansers and moisturizers. If irritation occurs after applying baking soda, users should rinse with lukewarm water, apply a gentle moisturizer, and avoid other harsh treatments. If swelling or severe irritation persists, professional medical advice should be sought.
