Local Elections: Wave of Candidate Exclusions Disrupts Party Lists
Decisions to reject candidacy files for the upcoming November 28 local elections have caused widespread disruption, leading to the exclusion of hundreds of current and former mayors and elected officials. Across the provinces of Mostaganem, Sidi Bel Abbès, Laghouat, and Boumerdès, political parties are struggling to fill vacancies after their candidates were rejected under Article 184 of the electoral law. In Mostaganem, over half of the prominent outgoing officials are out of the race, while in Sidi Bel Abbès, roughly 80% of the current provincial assembly members have been excluded. In Laghouat, the administrative court is processing dozens of appeals against decisions made by the Independent National Authority for Elections, and reports from Boumerdès suggest that 28 mayors could be affected. These measures, linked to efforts to improve political integrity and separate money from politics, have forced parties to scramble for new candidates as the campaign period approaches.
