The latest edition of the Official Gazette has published amendments to the Penal Code, establishing the death penalty for individuals found guilty of intentionally setting fire to forests and fields. This severe sanction also applies to the burning of public or private property linked to treason, foreign intelligence, or organized crime serving foreign interests. Authorities emphasize that such acts are seen as threats to national stability, public safety, and the nation's environmental and economic resources. The new legal framework holds not only the perpetrators accountable but also those who incite, plan, finance, or facilitate these crimes, including through social media platforms. These measures follow the widespread fires observed last August, which prompted the national anti-terrorism and organized crime prosecutor's office to investigate several cases, including the detention of nine suspects in Jijel for sabotage and endangering public safety.
