Mujahida Fatima Naamaoui, known as "Djamila," has passed away in Oran at the age of 83, following a lifetime dedicated to preserving the history of the Algerian War of Independence. She became widely recognized after a 1959 photograph captured the 16-year-old alongside martyrs Cheikh Mohammed and Medani Bouziane following their capture by Colonel Bigeard’s forces in Saïda. After a failed operation, the group was betrayed by informers and subjected to brutal public humiliation and torture in the city streets. Naamaoui was imprisoned in Mascara, Oran, and eventually France, where she met other prominent Algerian female freedom fighters. She received medical care from a French doctor, Stefanini, who was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison for assisting her. Following independence, she returned to Algeria, remaining a devoted guardian of the memories of her fallen comrades.
