Western Sahara: Polisario Front insists on the right to self-determination

Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the United Nations, has declared that self-determination and independence remain the essential pillars for any political settlement in Western Sahara. He explicitly rejected any proposals intended to circumvent these rights or normalize the Moroccan occupation. These remarks follow the first anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and precede the upcoming vote on the MINURSO mandate renewal scheduled for late October. Omar highlighted that the resolution mandates a solution aligned with the UN Charter, centered on the Sahrawi people's right to choose their future freely. Furthermore, he criticized the lack of political will from the Moroccan side, characterizing any efforts to bypass a referendum as attempts to consolidate occupation by force. The Polisario Front reaffirmed that its objective, as a national liberation movement, is to secure full sovereignty, categorically rejecting any political 'half-solutions' that compromise their national aspirations.
