Algeria hosts nearly 2,000 medical laboratories with a focus on early diagnosis

Dr. Ali Benjamaa Aich, head of the Algerian Syndicate of Medical Analysis Laboratories, announced that Algeria has approximately 2,000 medical laboratories, split evenly between public and private sectors. Speaking at the 5th International Scientific Days, "Salam Days 2026," held in Algiers, he emphasized the critical need for coordination between doctors and medical biologists to enhance diagnostic accuracy. The event highlighted thyroid cancer, noting that early detection can increase survival rates to 95%. Dr. Benjamaa noted that investing in diagnostic capabilities lowers treatment costs, which can otherwise increase tenfold due to delayed detection. He further advocated for developing local laboratory resources to reduce the need for sending samples abroad, asserting that Algerian professionals possess the necessary expertise, provided they are equipped with adequate technology.
