At a UNHCR Executive Committee meeting in Geneva, Algeria’s permanent representative, Idris Latreche, called for a clear distinction between humanitarian assistance and political agendas. Algeria refuted Moroccan attempts to use the refugee issue for political leverage, characterizing Rabat's moral stance as inconsistent given its primary role in the Western Sahara conflict. Latreche emphasized that the Tindouf camps remain open and transparent to UN agencies and international observers. He asserted that humanitarian aid is a fundamental right, not a form of charity, and warned against using it as a bargaining chip. The Algerian position reiterated that while supporting the Sahrawi people is paramount, the international community must address the root cause of the crisis, which is the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
