510 new archaeological and natural sites identified in Tassili n’Ajjer

A three-week exploration mission concluded between September 21 and October 11 has revealed 510 archaeological and natural sites in the In Azzane-Tadrart sector of the Tassili n’Ajjer Cultural Park. The survey, conducted 250 kilometers southeast of Djanet, required teams to travel on foot due to the challenging terrain. The inventory includes 265 funerary monuments, 207 surface sites, 29 rock art stations, and 9 natural sites. This documentation effort is part of a broader strategy to map and safeguard the park's heritage against risks like looting. The discovery coincides with upcoming cultural events in Djanet, such as the International Rock Art Festival, and ongoing national efforts to strengthen legal protection and international cooperation against the illicit trafficking of cultural property.
