Polisario Front Rejects US Draft on MINURSO and Threatens Withdrawal
The Polisario Front has formally rejected the new US draft proposal regarding the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), arguing that it deviates from international law and fails to serve as a valid basis for peace negotiations. In a formal communication to the UN Security Council, the Front warned that the proposal, if passed without significant changes—specifically regarding the omission of the referendum—could lead to their withdrawal from the political process. Former Algerian Ambassador Amar Belani criticized the draft for being heavily biased, favoring the Moroccan autonomy proposal and prematurely narrowing the scope of negotiations. Critics and activists argue that removing the referendum from the mission's mandate undermines the very foundation upon which the mission was established in 1991 and ignores the fundamental right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
