President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has signed Law No. 26-13, which amends the Algerian Penal Code to impose stricter penalties for serious offenses. Under the new provisions, the death penalty is mandatory for individuals found guilty of kidnapping, torturing, or sexually assaulting children, with no option for mitigating circumstances. The law also targets arsonists with severe measures; intentional fires in forests or natural areas are now punishable by death. This applies particularly to acts committed on behalf of foreign entities, by organized crime groups, or those threatening national security, the economy, or the environment. The law further extends this maximum penalty to those who incite, finance, or facilitate such crimes through any means, including digital platforms and social media. Additionally, the death penalty is enforced if an act of arson leads to the loss of human life.
