Alexei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, has unveiled Russia's ambition to establish a nuclear power station on the lunar surface by the mid-2030s. Current development efforts focus on a compact 10-kilowatt unit weighing no more than 1.2 tons, designed for at least ten years of safe operation. However, Likhachev noted that this power level is insufficient for large-scale industrial activities, including mining rare earth elements or manufacturing oxygen and rocket fuel from lunar ice. Consequently, the organization is exploring additional projects to create a facility with ten times the capacity of the current prototype.
