France-Algeria relations strain over Western Sahara policy

Diplomatic and economic ties between Algeria and France remain strained as Paris pushes for changes to the UN MINURSO mandate regarding Western Sahara. Former Algerian ambassador Amar Belani recently accused France of backing a US-led initiative to align the mission's scope with the Moroccan autonomy plan, framing it as the sole solution for the region. In a related escalation, reports citing diplomatic and industry sources reveal that Algeria has halted exports of urea fertilizers to France. This trade disruption is significant, as Algerian exports account for roughly 30% of French agricultural fertilizer imports. This move follows France's shift in policy on the Western Sahara issue, first observed in July 2024, which previously led to the recall of the Algerian ambassador. Business relations are also suffering, with reports indicating a decline in demand for French goods in Algeria, a situation acknowledged by Michel Bizac, head of the Franco-Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. France continues its support for the US position in the Security Council, maintaining a stance that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously warned would damage bilateral cooperation.
