Canadian author Anne Carson awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy announced last Thursday that Canadian writer Anne Carson (76) is the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The award recognizes her innovative contributions, which blend poetry and academic research while engaging in a bold dialogue with classical antiquity. Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson brings a strong background in classical literature to her writing, using it to reshape the connection between history and the present. Her work delves into themes of desire, absence, and memory, treating gaps in knowledge not as obstacles, but as essential elements of the text. Key works include "Eros the Bittersweet", "The Glass Essay", and "Autobiography of Red", alongside her translations of Sappho’s fragments and her book "Nox", which deals with personal loss. Carson’s approach challenges traditional literary genres, turning writing into an intellectual experience that avoids simplistic conclusions and embraces the complexity of human emotion.
