Trappes attack: outcry over hate speech in France
A deadly shooting in the Paris suburb of Trappes on Friday left one person of African descent dead and four others wounded, including a 12-year-old girl in critical condition. President Emmanuel Macron officially recognized the incident as a racist terrorist attack targeting victims based on their skin color or religion. Following the tragedy, Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh criticized media outlets and politicians for fueling a climate of hatred that risks sparking civil war through inflammatory rhetoric against Arabs and Muslims. Ségolène Royal also condemned the proliferation of anti-Arab sentiment on television channels. Furthermore, Algerian author Yasmina Khadra condemned those who incite hate, arguing that the true monsters are not only the gunmen, but those whose rhetoric creates an environment where such atrocities are possible.
