France reports first human case of Shamonda virus
France has confirmed its first human case of the Shamonda virus, an infection previously known to affect only animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. The patient, who suffered from severe immune deficiency, passed away in early October. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the transmission likely occurred via an insect bite in eastern France, where the virus had been active among livestock during the spring and summer. Health authorities and international organizations emphasize that this is an isolated case and currently presents no broader public health threat. Epidemiological investigations remain ongoing to better understand the transmission mechanism.
