President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed the government to prioritize the supply of desalinated seawater to the provinces of Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen to bolster the nation's water security. Three new desalination plants, each with a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, will be constructed in El Marsa, Sidi Ladjel, and Aïn Adjroud. These infrastructures are designed to address the challenges posed by drought and increasing domestic and economic demand. The President emphasized that future expansion to other provinces will be based on technical evaluations of local water resources and specific regional needs. In addition to investing in desalination, the government will implement stricter controls over well drilling and groundwater extraction to protect underground aquifers from depletion. These regulatory measures are expected to be incorporated into the upcoming agricultural orientation law, ensuring a balanced and sustainable management of water resources for the long term.
