The Polisario Front has formally denounced the lack of neutrality of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura. In a letter sent to Antonio Guterres by President Brahim Ghali, the movement claims that de Mistura has undermined his mandate by favoring an autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty during recent Security Council consultations. The Polisario views this as a departure from international legal standards and UN resolutions, which classify the region as a case of decolonization. Having previously warned the UN in March and September, the leadership now warns that continued disregard for impartiality will force them to reconsider their cooperation with the envoy. This tension arises as the Security Council prepares to discuss the future of the MINURSO mission, with its mandate set to expire on October 31st.
