Algeria confronts a series of security threats linked to foreign networks

Algerian security authorities have recently dismantled several criminal and espionage networks involving Moroccan nationals, revealing ongoing threats to national stability. A notable operation involved the arrest of 61 Moroccan citizens in Oran, including a former military member, who were planning sabotage activities after entering the country illegally. These developments follow the dismantling of an espionage ring in Tlemcen in September 2024 and the arrest of individuals linked to the 'MAK' movement in Tizi Ouzou in 2026. Authorities indicate these activities were aimed at compromising vital infrastructure and the electoral process, prompting the government to reinstate visa requirements. Political analyst Hakim Boughrara notes that Algeria is facing evolving tactics involving mercenaries and criminal syndicates, emphasizing the need for enhanced security vigilance and regional cooperation to address both cyber and conventional threats to national security.
