Mouloud Hachlaf, an official at the Algerian Seawater Desalination Company (a Sonatrach subsidiary), announced that the country currently produces 3.7 million cubic meters of desalinated water daily. Algeria ranks second in the Arab world after Saudi Arabia and second in the Mediterranean region after Spain. Desalination currently meets nearly half of the nation's potable water demand and covers 70 to 75 percent of the requirements in northern provinces. The five stations commissioned in 2025 in Oran, Tipaza, Boumerdès, Béjaïa, and El Tarf are operating at full capacity. As part of its 2030 strategy, Algeria aims to increase the coverage rate to 62 percent by constructing three additional plants in Tlemcen, Mostaganem, and Chlef, which will provide an additional daily capacity of 900,000 cubic meters.
