Ali Haroun, historical figure and last surviving member of the HCE, passes away at 99

Ali Haroun, a veteran of the national liberation war and a former member of the High Committee of State (HCE), has died this Saturday at the age of 99. He was the last living member of the collegiate body formed in January 1992 to manage state affairs following President Chadli Benjedid's resignation. A key witness to major historical turning points, Haroun joined the National Liberation Front at the start of the revolution in 1954, playing a vital role in political and media operations in France. In the post-independence era, he served as a member of the Constituent Assembly and as Minister Delegate for Human Rights in 1991. With his passing, the final figure of the five-member HCE—which included Mohamed Boudiaf, Khaled Nezzar, Ali Kafi, Reda Malek, and Tidjani Haddam—has disappeared.
