October 17th Massacre: Growing Call in France for Recognition as a State Crime

Calls for the official recognition of the October 17, 1961, massacre in Paris are gathering momentum as thirty French mayors signed a petition labeling the event a 'State crime.' The signatories, including the mayors of Paris and Saint-Denis, argue that the French authorities must acknowledge their direct responsibility for the violent repression of peaceful Algerian demonstrators. They are further demanding that this date be formally added to the national calendar and that access to archives regarding the Algerian War be improved. This movement follows earlier steps, including François Hollande’s 2012 acknowledgment of the 'bloody repression,' Emmanuel Macron’s 2021 description of the acts as 'inexcusable,' and a March 2024 resolution by the National Assembly. Chems-Eddine Hafiz, Rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, noted that recognizing these events is essential for historical equality, allowing the nation to face its past truthfully rather than lingering on endless guilt.
