Alger-Tamanrasset Railway: Progress and Timeline for the Strategic South Corridor
The 2,036 km railway project connecting Algiers to Tamanrasset is advancing toward its goal of completion by the end of 2028, as mandated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Out of the total distance, 308 km are currently operational, while 924 km are preparing to enter the construction phase, and 651 km are in the tendering process. The project, involving both local and international companies, is supported by a combination of state funding and international bank loans. Designed with modern infrastructure, including ERTMS signaling, the line aims to facilitate passenger travel at speeds up to 220 km/h and cargo transit at 100 km/h. This strategic corridor represents a major pillar for the economic integration and development of Algeria's southern regions.
