Trappes shooting sparks outcry over far-right political rhetoric

A deadly shooting in the French towns of Trappes and La Verrière has left one person dead and four others seriously injured, including a 12-year-old girl in critical condition. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office is investigating the attack as a terrorist act motivated by racism. In the wake of the tragedy, far-right leaders Éric Zemmour and Jordan Bardella face intense scrutiny. Critics argue that their inflammatory rhetoric and frequent targeting of the Muslim community and immigrant neighborhoods have fostered a climate of normalized hatred. Organizations assert that such political discourse provides an ideological framework for radicalized individuals. Abdallah Zekri, president of the Observatory for the Fight Against Islamophobia, has called for a major political stand against the far-right, stressing that the violence of words is intrinsically linked to the violence of acts, and urging for a defense of national unity.
