Beauty filters and makeup deception: A growing cause for breakups
Excessive use of makeup and digital filters has become a significant source of marital strife, with many viewing such radical transformations as a form of deception. In Algerian popular heritage, makeup is sometimes referred to as a "deceiver of believers," highlighting the gap between portrayed appearances and reality. Numerous men have reported being shocked when seeing their fiancées without makeup for the first time, leading many relationships to end in broken engagements or even divorce. According to Sharia professor Belkacem Z., makeup that intentionally alters fundamental features can be considered fraudulent, giving a man the right to call off an engagement. Post-marriage, the possibility of divorce due to this deception depends on judicial assessment regarding emotional harm. The rise of social media and beauty filters has further complicated the issue by creating artificial standards, prompting many young men today to insist on seeing their potential partners without any cosmetics before committing.
