Electoral Dynamics: Between the Pursuit of Change and the Instrumentalization of the Vote

Electoral practices have evolved throughout history, from ancient aristocratic councils and shura systems to modern democratic structures designed to represent citizens and oversee the executive branch. The primary goal was always to ensure a dignified life, justice, and to move beyond eras of tyranny. However, many regimes, particularly in the third world, face a struggle between forces seeking genuine political change and those attempting to engineer elections to ensure their retention of power. In this context, elections are often used as a means to solidify influence rather than facilitate power transitions. Nevertheless, the current landscape points to tangible shifts, as the dominance of traditional parties begins to fade in favor of new social and political forces seeking broader participation in managing public affairs.
