President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has directed an official inquiry into the distribution and pricing of imported meat in Algeria. Despite government initiatives such as reducing customs duties to 5% and capping profit margins for distributors and retailers, consumers are still facing high prices. Originally intended to provide an affordable alternative to local meat—which has surged past 3,300 dinars per kilogram—imported products are being sold at similar, inflated rates. During a recent Council of Ministers, evidence of monopolies and price manipulation was highlighted. Consequently, the Ministry of Commerce has launched field investigations to hold accountable those involved in speculative practices that undermine state efforts to maintain social affordability.
