Algeria and Senegal Revitalize Bilateral Ties with 15 New Agreements

The sixth session of the Algeria-Senegal Joint Cooperation Commission concluded in Algiers on October 13, 2026, marking a significant milestone after nearly three decades of dormancy. Co-chaired by Algerian Minister Ahmed Attaf and Senegalese Minister Cheikh Niang, the meeting resulted in the signing of 15 agreements and memoranda of understanding. The cooperation covers key sectors such as energy, trade, transportation, higher education, culture, and sports. Both nations aim to translate these diplomatic ties into concrete economic projects, leveraging the Algeria-Senegal Business Council and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Regarding academic relations, the parties plan to boost student mobility and research exchanges. Currently, there are no changes to visa requirements or air travel services announced as a result of these agreements. Follow-up mechanisms involving ministerial focal points have been established to monitor the implementation and set timelines for these initiatives.
