CAF considers keeping the Africa Cup of Nations biennial

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has indicated that the governing body is reconsidering the decision to move the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle, potentially maintaining the current biennial format. Speaking at a conference in Cape Verde, Motsepe stated that all options are being reviewed. Last December, the organization had announced that the tournament would switch to a quadrennial schedule starting in 2028, following the 2027 edition in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, to coincide with the launch of the new African Nations League. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has expressed opposition to the proposed change, arguing that it serves the interests of European clubs rather than national teams. Since 1968, the tournament has been held every two years, and there remains significant pressure to preserve this tradition to ensure the independence of African football.
