Passing of Ali Haroun: A legacy of humanism and legal integrity

Ali Haroun, a veteran freedom fighter, lawyer, and the last surviving member of the High Committee of State (HCE), has passed away. Throughout his life, Haroun was recognized as a beacon of humanism, consistently prioritizing legal rights and ethical conduct during turbulent periods of Algerian history. Known for his courage as a lawyer, he represented those in opposition to the system, demonstrating unwavering dedication to human rights. During his tenure with the HCE, he focused on the conditions of those held in security centers in the South. He worked to expedite legal procedures, ensure family access, and permitted international observers, including the ICRC and Amnesty International, to visit detention facilities. His commitment to moderation and his focus on the rights of individuals remain a testament to his character and his efforts to bridge the gap between state actions and humanitarian standards.
