French think tank report sparks debate over Algerian-origin voters

A report by the French foundation "Fondapol" has analyzed the voting trends of French citizens of Algerian descent, suggesting a strong inclination to support Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise. The study, authored by Nicolas Bouzoumoni, examines naturalization statistics from 2004 to 2023, noting that Algerians represent the largest group acquiring French citizenship from outside the EU. Abdallah Zekri, head of the National Observatory Against Islamophobia, has challenged these findings, describing the report as a political maneuver intended to influence public opinion and damage Mélenchon's electoral prospects. Zekri argues that linking naturalization to political support ignores the social motivations of voters in disadvantaged neighborhoods, who favor Mélenchon for his advocacy on behalf of vulnerable groups.
